Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AWS data transfer in and data transfer out?

Data transfer in is traffic entering an AWS Region from the internet. AWS doesn't charge for it, so this calculator doesn't ask for inbound usage. Data transfer out leaves AWS for the internet and uses Region-specific aggregate tiers after the eligible shared allowance.

How does the shared internet egress allowance work?

AWS currently provides 100 GB per month of eligible data transfer out to the internet, aggregated across AWS services and commercial Regions. Enter the allowance still remaining and your other accumulated eligible usage so this calculator prices only the new traffic in the correct tier.

Is AWS cross-Region data transfer pricing directional?

Yes. AWS publishes an outbound price for the exact source-to-destination Region pair and a separate inbound line item at $0 for the receiving side. This calculator resolves the exact direction, shows the paid source charge, and never assumes the reverse path has the same rate.

Why can cross-AZ traffic be charged on both sides?

For the standard cross-AZ case, AWS meters the resource sending the bytes and the resource receiving them. That can produce one outbound-side and one inbound-side charge. Some AWS services exempt one or both sides, so always verify the service pricing pages for the actual path.

Does this calculator include NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, or DataSync?

No. Those products can add their own processing, port, SiteLink, endpoint, or managed transfer fees. The calculator covers the standard AWS Data Transfer dimensions only and lists every explicit exclusion beside the estimate.

How can I find and reduce AWS data transfer costs?

Inspect Cost and Usage Report usage types ending in AWS-Out-Bytes and DataTransfer-Regional-Bytes. Keep high-volume producers and consumers in the same Region, and place chatty application tiers in the same Availability Zone when your resilience requirements allow it. Check each service's pricing page before treating a standard transfer charge as the final bill.
