Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this EBS pricing calculator?

This EBS pricing calculator uses official AWS pricing data updated regularly from Amazon's public pricing API. It accounts for regional pricing differences, tiered IOPS rates, and free tier benefits. For production budgets, verify final costs in the AWS Billing console since pricing occasionally changes.

Should I use gp3 or gp2 volumes?

gp3 is recommended for most workloads. It offers 20% lower storage costs than gp2 and lets you provision IOPS and throughput independently. gp3 includes a baseline of 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/s at no extra cost. Only use gp2 for legacy applications that require burst performance based on storage size.

When should I use io2 volumes?

Use io2 volumes for I/O-intensive workloads requiring more than 16,000 IOPS or 99.999% durability. io2 is ideal for critical databases like Oracle, SAP HANA, and Microsoft SQL Server. io2 Block Express supports up to 256,000 IOPS and 4,000 MB/s throughput.

When should I use HDD volumes (st1/sc1)?

Use st1 (Throughput Optimized HDD) for frequently accessed, throughput-intensive workloads like big data, data warehouses, and log processing. Use sc1 (Cold HDD) for infrequently accessed data where the lowest storage cost is important. Note: HDD volumes cannot be used as boot volumes.

How are EBS snapshots priced?

EBS snapshots are stored incrementally - only the changed blocks since the last snapshot are charged. The first snapshot copies the entire volume. Snapshot storage is priced per GB-month. You can also use Snapshot Archive for long-term storage at lower cost with longer retrieval times.

What's included in the EBS Free Tier?

New AWS accounts get 30 GB of EBS storage, 2 million I/O operations, and 1 GB of snapshot storage free each month for 12 months. The free tier applies to General Purpose (SSD) or Magnetic volumes only.

Tip

Stop AWS bill surprises from happening.

Most infrastructure changes look harmless until you see next month's AWS bill. CloudBurn prevents this by analyzing the cost impact of your AWS CDK changes directly in GitHub pull requests, catching expensive mistakes during code review when fixes are quick, not weeks later when they're costly and risky.
