Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AWS FIS action-minute?
An action-minute is one minute that one FIS action remains active. AWS rounds each action's active duration to the nearest minute before adding action-minutes across the experiment. For example, 1.49 active minutes bills as 1 minute, while 1.5 active minutes bills as 2. FIS has no minimum fee, so an action below half a minute rounds to 0 billed minutes.
Do parallel AWS FIS actions share one duration charge?
No. Every parallel action is billed for its own active duration. Two actions running in parallel for 20 minutes each create 40 action-minutes. A 10-minute sequential action in the same experiment raises the total to 50 action-minutes.
Does the orchestrator account count as an additional FIS target account?
No. Count the target accounts where actions run. One target account costs the same as a single-account experiment, and each target account after the first adds the regional account action-minute rate. A 5-account experiment uses the base rate plus 4 additional-account rates for every billed action-minute.
How are AWS FIS experiment reports priced?
AWS bills each generated experiment report separately from action-minutes. A report can summarize the experiment's actions and include application response from a CloudWatch dashboard. AWS doesn't publish an FIS report SKU for GovCloud in the Price List API, so the calculator marks report pricing there as unavailable.
Does FIS pricing include affected AWS resource costs?
No. Direct FIS pricing does not depend on affected resource count, but EC2, RDS, EKS, CloudWatch, logs, alarms, application traffic, and data transfer can still create separate charges. The estimate also leaves out taxes, AWS Support, credits, and negotiated pricing.
How can I reduce AWS FIS costs?
- Stop actions once the experiment has enough evidence.
- Keep experiments focused instead of repeating unrelated actions together.
- Generate reports only when you need retained evidence or stakeholder review.
- Include only the target accounts required for the test.
