An Optimization Scan assesses a connected AWS account across Unused Resources, Resource Efficiency, Commitment Savings, and Cost Governance. Each area reviews the same scan snapshot, so you can compare findings without running a separate scan for every area.
Choose a review area
| Area | Review decision |
|---|---|
| Unused Resources | Remove, stop, pause, or release paid assets that may no longer be needed |
| Resource Efficiency | Improve sizing, architecture, autoscaling, lifecycle, retention, or storage configuration while retaining resources |
| Commitment Savings | Assess Savings Plans and reservation purchases, renewals, coverage, and utilization |
| Cost Governance | Check cost-allocation metadata, budgets, anomaly detection, and account spending controls |
Run a scan
You need a Pro or Enterprise plan and a connected AWS account whose role access, storage, and Resource Explorer checks pass. Every workspace member can run scans; owners and admins manage account connections.
- Under Cost optimization, open an area such as Unused Resources.
- Choose the AWS account you want to assess, then choose Run optimization scan. One scan refreshes all four areas. If the button is unavailable, follow the readiness guidance or wait for the account's active scan to finish.
- Review the results when the scan completes. While a replacement scan runs, the previous successful snapshot remains available.
- Open Overview to compare the areas, review their check outcomes and data sources, and choose the findings to investigate first.
Inventory checks cover the connection's configured Region. Account-wide data sources can contribute findings with a wider scope. Check the Evidence scope on each area before treating a result as coverage of your whole account.
Read the selected snapshot
The Snapshot selector defaults to the latest successful snapshot. Choose a timestamped entry to revisit a previous run, or Load older snapshots when more history is available. Switching between areas keeps the selected account and snapshot.
Each area shows Findings, Checks, and a Snapshot outcome. Commitment Savings also shows Known monthly savings where financial evidence is available. An unknown amount remains unknown; it does not mean there are no savings.
| Snapshot outcome | What to do |
|---|---|
| Complete | Review the findings and individual check outcomes |
| Partial | Review the available findings and the explanation of missing evidence |
| Unavailable or Failed | Follow the evidence or error guidance; the area was not assessed |
The page shows when the snapshot completed and when it expires. Overview flags an older selection when a newer successful snapshot exists. Run a new scan when results have expired or after fixing a data-source issue.
Review checks and findings
Use the status filters to inspect Failed, Passed, Unknown, or Not applicable checks, or choose All. Unknown appears when a check lacks enough evidence; a missing assessment is not a passing check.
Use the search field to search resource names and IDs, or choose a suggested check to narrow the results. Open a check group, then a finding, to review its evidence, recommendation, and available remediation guidance before changing AWS resources. Commands are examples for your review; CloudBurn does not execute them. The Rules documentation owns the open-source checks; additional AWS recommendation sources are identified in the finding.
Data sources and incomplete evidence
The Overview includes data-source guidance, and area summaries explain missing evidence. Optional AWS data sources can affect individual checks without preventing the base scan from running. For example, Lambda memory recommendations in Resource Efficiency need AWS Compute Optimizer data.
Open Data sources → Details on the Overview for readiness, affected areas, setup steps, and an AWS setup guide. Follow the guidance for the affected source, then choose Check again to run a new scan. CloudBurn does not enroll your account in optional AWS recommendation services for you.
Export findings
From an area's Export menu, choose Matching findings to download the filtered results or All findings for the whole area. Choose Download CSV or Download Markdown. The download uses the displayed snapshot and includes up to 10,000 findings in check order. Areas that were not assessed do not offer findings exports.
