Commitment Savings reviews purchases, renewals, coverage, and utilization of Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, and other reservations: RDS, Redshift, and ElastiCache capacity running On-Demand without reserved coverage, Savings Plans purchases AWS recommends for your usage, and EC2 reservations about to expire or recently expired. It is one of four areas of a Cost Optimization scan, and the same scan refreshes all four. Open Commitment Savings under Cost optimization, choose an AWS account, and run a scan or review its latest snapshot; Run a scan covers plans, readiness, and snapshot history.
What it checks
Commitment Savings runs 8 checks. The two Cost Optimization Hub checks and the SageMaker coverage check are account-wide; the others cover the configured Region.
| Check | Rule | Evidence scope |
|---|---|---|
| Cost Optimization Hub Savings Plans Purchase Recommended | CLDBRN-AWS-COSTOPTIMIZATIONHUB-1 | Account-wide |
| Reservation-Eligible Usage Without Reserved Capacity | CLDBRN-AWS-COSTOPTIMIZATIONHUB-2 | Account-wide |
| EC2 Reserved Instance Expiring | CLDBRN-AWS-EC2-7 | Configured Region |
| EC2 Reserved Instance Recently Expired | CLDBRN-AWS-EC2-12 | Configured Region |
| ElastiCache Cluster Missing Reserved Coverage | CLDBRN-AWS-ELASTICACHE-1 | Configured Region |
| RDS DB Instance Missing Reserved Coverage | CLDBRN-AWS-RDS-3 | Configured Region |
| Redshift Cluster Missing Reserved Coverage | CLDBRN-AWS-REDSHIFT-2 | Configured Region |
| SageMaker Savings Plans Coverage Low | CLDBRN-AWS-SAGEMAKER-3 | Account-wide |
The two Cost Optimization Hub checks need Cost Optimization Hub enabled, and SageMaker Savings Plans Coverage Low reads AWS Cost Explorer. When a source is not set up, its checks report missing evidence and the rest run as usual. See data sources.
Read the savings
Commitment Savings is the only area that adds up money. Its summary leads with Known monthly savings, and each finding row shows its Monthly savings. The total only counts savings with financial evidence:
| Known monthly savings shows | Meaning |
|---|---|
| An amount | The total of the findings priced in one currency and period; the note says how many of the findings are priced |
| Unknown | No finding in the snapshot has a known amount |
| No safe total | Some findings are priced, but their amounts overlap or cannot be tied to one subject, so adding them could count savings twice |
| — | The snapshot has no Commitment Savings findings |
It never shows zero for missing evidence. Each finding is labelled by the commitment or the eligible usage it covers, and its Read-only: Commitment guidance explains what to buy, renew, or extend. CloudBurn's role is read-only, so the purchase decision and the purchase stay with you.
Exports include the current cost, potential savings, currency, and whether each amount is known. See Export findings.
Run it yourself
Every check above is an open-source rule that runs in discovery mode, so you can run it against your own account with cloudburn discover. Platform runs the same rules through the role you deployed and keeps snapshot history for your workspace.
